Eric supplies the bass vocals and plays the bass fiddle. Though he was classically trained on the string bass in high school, he for a short month played bluegrass as a teen. He hasn’t touched a bass since then. Could the last time really be thirty-five years ago? In just a month he has been able to pick up numerous tunes through local jams and playing at home. We are very proud of his hard work and enthusiasm. He makes every effort to keep the beat to every song and to improve his playing for his growing energetic gang. Who says you’re too old to learn? We like to think Life begins at Fifty!
Paula, as a wife and a busy mother, still manages to write prolifically. In the early morning you’ll find her tucked in some chair, a journal in her lap with her pen flying rapidly across the page. She writes about everything she sees, from her keen observations of everyday life around her, and then manages to put all of these insights into thought provoking poems. From her poems she has managed to transpose many of them into beautiful and original songs. Some of them become moving hymns of faith, while others deal with the struggles and joys of family life. Although Paula was not trained musically in the classical sense, the music is in her head. Nathan and Natalie have done a superb job of assisting her in drawing the music out into intricate melodies that are now an integral part of our little family’s favorites to play and perform for others. Paula has recently taken up playing the mandolin, and with Natalie’s assistance, is learning it quickly. Paula, with her clear soprano voice, provides both lead and harmonies for our band.
Nathan in his fourteenth year of life has been playing guitar for just over two years. In that time he has accelerated his playing from strumming basic chords, to playing rich, intricate leads with confidence and poise. The willingness of numerous experienced fellow guitar players to share their “tricks of the trade” with Nathan, and his own dedication to practice and attention to details has paid off. He now plays lead guitar for Jerry Rosa’s band, The Rosa String Works Band , and of course his family band, The Lonesome Hill Gang. He has had various on stage performances in the local and surrounding areas. He is our lead guitar player and sings lead and harmony vocals. His baritone voice shows its promise in a classic charm, watch out!
Natalie did not escape the eye of a local area friend, Jerry Rosa, who noticed her attentiveness while others were playing at her first bluegrass jam. He introduced her to the mandolin, and she flew from there like the fingers of Bill Monroe. It was not until six months later that she even owned her own mandolin, which she received on her eleventh birthday along with an instructional mandolin DVD. She has been playing for just over a year now, and like her brother Nathan, she too has taken off in leaps and bounds. Her appearances have been along side her brother and family in various local area shows. Her sweet manner matches that of her sweet voice, singing leads and harmony. What Natalie puts her tender heart to do; she does it and does it well.
Glen is a banjo player in waiting. He’s expressed his interest in playing the banjo, and we have begun to help him in the same manner as his siblings. He is a robust eight year old, and feeling his oats. We hope to direct his enthusiasm into his banjo playing this year. Watch out for this slim young man, whose personality will delight anyone. His voice in his small frame packs a wallop of a sound, and we can’t wait for this banjo player to show off his stuff.
Gage certainly measures up to a ripe seven year old, whose spunk will be perfect for a future fiddle player. His sunshiny smile will delight any crowd, as well as his spontaneous humor. His resonating voice and personality is what we would call a loaded gun of exclamation marks that will certainly leave their mark.
